Michael Jackson Tribute
Without opening too large a can of worms…
I watched the MJ tribute today and thought it was very moving, respectful, and well done in general. I was in tears when his daughter spoke.
I grew up listening to the Jackson 5. I remember meeting someone my age when I was around 13 who was going to junior high school with MJ in Philadelphia and I was in awe of that. Although I wasn’t a huge fan in the 80’s or 90’s, I did enjoy most of his music.
More importantly, I think that he was a gigantic humanitarian and philanthropist. I heard an estimate on CNN of the amount of money he has donated to various causes of 300-500 million. More than that, he gave enormous amounts of time to charities and people in need and raised the public awareness of world hunger, aids, and other worthwhile causes.
As well, if dozens of reputable people who know someone well say that they are a wonderful person, they are probably a wonderful person. All the stuff you hear in the media about anybodyfamous automatically should go into the “crap” and “pay no attention to it” pile.
While it is OK to honor a great artist, which he clearly was, I think that he gave much more than that to society and to many individual people around the world. In any case, if millions of people want to honor him or anyone else, so be it.
RIP Michael Jackson.
