Mattingly v Keith Hernandez
From 1984-1987, Mattingly had 25 wins above replacement (WAR). Here are the top 6:
32 Boggs
26.7 Henderson
25.7 Gwynn
25.3 Mattingly
25 Ripken
25 Raines
From 1979-1982, Hernandez had 23 wins:
32 Schmidt
26.7 Brett
25.8 Yount
24.6 Bell B (!!!)
24 Dawson
23.7 Carter G
22.9 Wilson W
22.9 Hernandez
On the other hand, if you pick and choose Keith Hernandez’s 4 best years (79, 80, 84, 86), he has 26 WAR. In terms of “peak”, is Mattingly and Hernandez equals, or is Mattingly clearly better?
In terms of “peak”, do you care whether all the seasons occurred consecutively, or, can you pick and choose the best single seasons? And if you can pick and choose best single season, why not best half-season? Month? Week? Game? Inning? Play? How far can you go? I suppose game, because that’s the unit of performance we care about ultimately. So, would it be fair for me, for example, to pick out the 500 or 1000 best games of each player, and then say “this is the player at his peak”? And, if that’s the case, can I pick out the 200 or 300 best starts for a pitcher and call that his peak?
I think it has (some) validity. You tell me why or why not, and I’ll do it.
