Man advantage numbers in soccer
Great stuff from Gabe, and exactly the question I was asking myself this weekend.
When you are one man down, you end up taking only about one-third the shots (and the team that is up one man takes two-thirds the shots). Goal-scoring, it’s about 72% to 28%.
Another tidbit is that in normal 11-on-11 play, the home team scores 1.4 goals and allows 1.0 goals. I’ll see if I can construct a quick Poisson chart to show what that means in terms of win expectancy.
