Mail: Referencing The Book

By Tangotiger, 03:43 PM

My question has to do with how you feel about being quoted and used as a resource?  I figure I’m good to reference you and The Book, but I don’t want to be quoting The Book without your permission.  Are there sections of The Book that you’d prefer me not quote (so people, you know, buy it)? Thanks for all you do.

I would say that you should quote as much as you want, however you want, within the bounds of fair use.  I think what Rich Lederer did with the Bill James Abstracts is a great model:

Sean Forman also did a great deconstruction of PAP (back when he showed the world his great sabermetric skills, as opposed to hiding it in favor of his presentation and programming skills) with some passages quoted:

Anything like that is what you should strive for.
