Luongo made an observation of Thomas’ style, not ability
Ah, the lamestream media. All ready to take things out of context and manufacture stories. Luongo observed that because he likes to play closer to the net and because Thomas likes to challenge shooters more, then:
Bieksa ricocheted it off the boards behind Thomas, who was essentially caught out of position. Luongo was asked if that was a difficult save to make. “It’s not hard if you’re playing in the paint,” said Luongo. “It’s an easy save for me, but if you’re wandering out and aggressive like he does, that’s going to happen. He might make some saves that I won’t, but in a case like that, we want to take advantage of a bounce like that and make sure we’re in a good position to bury those.”
Makes sense. Nothing controversial. This was n=1. Luongo was not suggesting that Luongo’s style is better than Thomas’, nor was he suggesting that he was better skilled than Thomas. But, the lamestream media was in full force.
Can’t we simply have a frank discussion about playing strategies? I’d love to hear more from players, but they won’t talk because they don’t trust the media to report fairly.
And of course, with Luongo’s horrible first period last night, the writers ask Thomas if he (Thomas) would have made those saves. That is a question of skill, not style. And Thomas (smartly) wasn’t biting.
