Loyalty? Loyalty my ass.
The NHL could never have envisioned a better face for its league than Wayne Gretzky. Not only was he the greatest player of all time, but he was also its greatest ambassador. In his retirement speech, he said he owed everything he had to the NHL. (He repeated this again on his personal website, which you can read along with reader comments.) This guy’s talent is trumped by his humility.
And what does the NHL do? Last week in open court, they said they would not honor Gretzky’s contract with the Coyotes, if they are the winning bidder (the NHL is competing with Blackberry CEO for the team). His contract is enormous, especially for a coach (similar to a #1 player). I can understand why they would do it, as an isolated incident. But, given how much value the NHL has reaped from Gretzky (only Michael Jordan has more value to his league than Gretzky), the NHL should almost consider giving Gretzky a lifetime contract as ambassador for the league.
But no. As Jim Kelley points out on Gretzky’s announcement that he is quitting as coach by quoting a source:
“He’s really upset by the fact that they never even talked to him,” the source said. “Had they just come to him and said this is what we need to do, he would have done it, but they never did that. This guy is the best thing that ever happened to the league and he’s being treated like he doesn’t even exist.”
Your employer is loyal to you, as long as you generate more for them than they are paying for you. Loyalty? Loyalty my ass.
