Lee Smith v Tim Raines

By Tangotiger, 06:07 PM

Lee Smith had 2646 plate appearances in high leverage situations. Tim Raines had 1929 such plate appearances.  Fairly close.  That is, they would have both had a similar impact with the game on the line.

In medium leverage, Smith had 1131 plate appearances, while Raines had 4547.  Not close at all.

Basically, while on a percentage basis, Lee Smith’s plate appearances were more of the high leverage variety, that’s only because Tim Raines played with the game on the line as much as Smith, PLUS dragged down his “average” by also playing when he still had a decent amount of impact on the game.

It is insane to think that Lee Smith could have had the same impact, over the course of his career, as Tim Raines.
