Lebron’s best economic move
Nate says:
Basically, I suspect that LeBron’s best economic decision is based on some function of the actual difficulty of winning a championship relative to the perceived one. I don’t know exactly how you arbitrage that
The whole article is a philosophical discussion with no empirical data, which is fine. At the same time, this prevents having an informed opinion, which the above looks like it would be.
For example, let’s look at Wayne Gretzky. His Edmonton Oilers were a powerhouse starting from his 3rd NHL season, went to the finals in his 4th, and won in the 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th. His brand really was created in his 3rd season (before the Cups), and went up somewhat from there. It was also evident that he was surrounded by superstars as well. Mario Lemieux’s brand didn’t need the championships, and even though he was surrounding by a somewhat lesser group of talent, his winning two Cups weren’t more brand-value for him. Is Kobe more brandy with or without Shaq? So, I don’t know that winning championships matter, and I don’t know that winning more than expected matters.
Basically, you can make the argument either way as to how you can create the better brand. I think Nate presents the argument points well-enough. But I don’t think the quoted part above should have been part of all this. It’s a bullsh!t kind of statement to make (as in summary opinion without evidence).
