School paper reports that Kurkjian tells writers to go in their basements and watch a game
Ugh:
Kurkjian then commented on the new completely statistic-oriented writers, who insist that certain players’ statistics aren’t good enough, such as the 28 writers who did not vote for Ricky Henderson in January. Kurkjian’s advice: “Just watch the game.”
He must have been misquoted. He couldn’t possibly have said something this incomprehensible.

On a related note: If there was a single statistics-oriented writer who voted against Rickey (and I don’t believe that one exists), I’d kick him out of my fictitious club. Don’t you put Corky Simpson in with Rob Neyer.
If I had to guess the demographics of the 28 writers who didn’t vote for Rickey Henderson, I’d have to say it was those writers who have NOT watched a game since 1980. I would like to invite them to my basement; my mom would be glad to serve him milk & cookies, and make sure he’s got a warm blankie.
They must also think they are keepers of the Holy Grail, who if they were Cardinals would be determined to ensure that their first ballot would be blank when electing the next Pope.
