Justifying rooting against Lebron
Poz makes his case. And his case is about treating Lebron as a character, some role he plays. Basically, just as you root against Sean Bean in Hitcher, Patriot Games, Goldeneye, and Don’t Say a Word (*), it should be easy to root for Sean Bean in Game Of Thrones. And EXTREMELY EASY to root for Sean Bean when he talks to David Letterman.
(*) I’ve never seen Lord of the Rings, but I’ll presume he’s a baddie there?
When Lebron James played for the US Olympic team, he’s still treated as a bad boy. Fans are still not going to be rooting for him, even if he’s playing for your country. They’ll be holding their nose. While it’s a fine idea to say that sports should be akin to acting, the reality is that fans wear their sports allegiance on their sleeves, and they don’t do the separation that Poz suggests that we should do. And I don’t know that players see themselves as actors anyway. I’d like to see Lebron James play for the US Olympic team in Cleveland, and hear their reaction.

By the way, Shaq is from Newark. And he laughed at the idea a few years back of playing for the Nets. “Are you kidding me?” or words to that effect. But we all love Shaq anyway. And, he said he would LOVE to be the GM of the Nets now.
Lebron basically did the same thing.
