Jon Heyman’s uncertainty level in predictions
Jeff Sullivan notes that Heyman said this back in April:
Weaver, the best in the AL so far—by a lot—is all but a goner in two years...The Angels don’t have a history of keeping their own prime free agents anyway, and they have to have an inkling that this ship has sailed. There’s no point even suggesting a Felix Hernandez/Justin Verlander type deal now ($80 million-plus for five years as a four-year pitcher) because that won’t be in the ballpark.
Now, is Heyman predicting this, or is he being Scott Boras’ mouthpiece?
Because this is why we need to add huge levels of uncertainty to anything a mainstream media guy says. We presume they must know things, when really, they don’t.
Or, is this simply an oddball case, like the Cubs blowing Game 6 against the Marlins, even though they had a 96% chance of winning the game?
How about when a writer predicts something, they put odds on what they are saying. Just so we can keep track of their rumor skills.

Oh, Jeff, Weaver did not “lose” his case. He asked for a deal that was way above Felix and Verlander. Indeed, the Angels offered more than Felix and Verlander got. It’s not that Weaver lost, but he wanted Tim Lincecum money. He rolled the dice and lost on being Lincecum, but won on being Felix/Verlander. Which is where he was all along.
