Jack The Ripper
The London Rippers baseball team has introduced a character named Diamond Jack (hence, Jack The Ripper). Everyone is up in arms (on both sides of the fence). One side claiming it’s “too soon”, and the other side claiming “get over it already”. Or something like that.
I decided to look for other “Jack The Ripper” references. Here’s one from… Disney, for best costume, with ripper apparently denoting riptide or something surfing related, combined with a “frightful” pet costume.
Amazon, among other places, has a Jack The Ripper costume for sale.
I dunno. We can romanticize or otherwise “appreciate” things like Pirates, who presumably, we’re bad people. And, we’ve got no problem with Devils (and Angels at the same time). I remember some in Colorado were upset about the Avalanche name (it had caused recent deaths I think). I guess with Jack The Ripper, it’s a specific individual, like Son of Sam. (But then we get the Sons of Sam Horn message board.) Jack The Ripper seems, I think, more like a Moriarity figure, a fictional character based in London, even if he wasn’t.
I dunno…
