Interesting article about saberists working for teams (and other things)…
http://thebaseballchronicle.com/reporting/the_once_and_future_baseball_man
I did not know that Victor Wang, an excellent analyst, was so young!
In the article, from one of my least favorite ex-GM’s, who somehow got a reputation for being a smart, sabermetrically-inclined executive:
After Epstein’s hiring, former Oakland player personnel director and Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi told Sports Illustrated, “There’s sometimes the idea in baseball that if you didn’t play or manage in the bigs, you don’t know what a big league guy has to be.”
The bolding is mine, because I have no idea what that means.
The other thought which came to my mind while reading the article was how many excellent saberists are working for teams, yet there still seems to be a large disconnect between them and what teams actually do, especially on the field. IOW, despite the fact that many teams have access to excellent analysts in their front office, their managers still do so many obviously stupid things on the field. In my opinion, even the most sabermetrically-oriented teams still have a long way to go in terms of managerial in-game strategic decisions.
