If I was a ballplayer, I’d be…
Brian Bannister? Dude just said the same things I’ve just said:
6. What’s the most overrated stat?
BB: It’s a toss-up for me between wins and batting average. … Just because you hit .300 - if you have a .300 on-base percentage and .300 slugging percentage, it wasn’t a good year. It’s very deceiving. Now, there’s a lot of hitters, like a Miguel Cabrera or a Joe Mauer, where there’s a lot to go along with the average, but it’s the one stat that you’ll see everywhere, every time on every scoreboard, every newspaper, regardless.
...
8. If you could change one rule to make baseball better, what would it be?BB: I would like, it falls into that problem of changing history, but I wish wins could be based on the quality of the outing, instead of just being the one that left the game when your team went up by a run. I wish there was some way to quantify the production of a pitcher instead of just wins and losses. So, if there was a way to change the rule on wins into some kind of conversion, or wins above replacement, I would much rather have it that way.
...
It’s ridiculous, but there’s no way to change it, because you’d be changing the whole history of baseball. … It’s like taking back Social Security - it’s probably not going to happen, even though it would probably benefit a lot of people in the long run.
