Ichiro, the timeless warrior
Love the line by Rally:
What I see here is the lack of a clearly defined aging pattern. Ichiro’s skills, and the magnitude of his play, appear to be the same at age 20 as they were at age 27, and remain so at age 35. He is the timeless warrior.
Also, at some point the “National” Baseball Hall of Fame will stop being so nationalistic. The Hockey Hall of Fame for example has Tretiak in it, who never played an NHL game, but played against the best NHL players. The rules are all about ”the game of hockey”, and has nothing to do with the “Major Leagues”, like the Baseball Hall of Fame requires.
By the way, the Order of Canada has something that we’ve talked about: different circles. We have the “member”, “officer”, and “companion”. Wayne Gretzky in 1984 was given “officer” (though only actually given the medal when he retired in 1998). He was recently promoted to “companion”.
This would be great for baseball and hockey. Imagine for example giving Clemens, Bonds, and others in the boat the first-level hall of fame ("member" according to the Order of Canada). That gets them in. You can also get Edgar Martinez and Larry Walker in. Then, some years later, the Holy Writers can refuse to promote any of them to “officer”, while waiting for say maybe Barry Larkin to get that promotion, along with Rickey. And, years after that, you can get Rickey promoted to “companion”, the highest honor. (You don’t have to use those names, of course.)
Everyone wins.
