Human element

By Tangotiger, 10:21 AM

I wasn’t too crazy about this article.  Just not my style.  But, I am pretty particular.  In any case, I’ll take the wins where we can get them, and the money quote which redeems the author:

I want the human element of the game as well, but I want it from the players!

That’s a great line.  I’ve never heard it before.

This is not to say that I would go 100% PITCHf/x on this.  When humans miss, they usually miss on the periphery.  Pitches down the middle will never be called a ball by any umpire.  A human-calibrated technological solution?  You bet, that’s going to happen occasionally.  I think fans and players are more likely to accept alot of “blown” or inconsistent calls on the periphery, as long as all the down-the-middle calls are made.  I think anyway.

The ideal setup?  I’m thinking let the computer make the call, and let the umpire be able to override only the “obvious” mistakes.  So, anything on the edge of the plate, the umpire should let stand.  I’m also not sure that the umpire should necessarily be standing behind home plate.

In any case, in order to ensure consistency, you can’t have the operator setting up the system adjust the calibration in-game.  Or, if he will, then the calibration must be announced.  I presume what’s going to happen instead is that the calibration is going to be done pre-game, with each of the 50 players standing at home plate.  But, then we have the issue that, apparently, the weight of 40,000 fans will decalibrate.

So, I’d like to hear, from a practical sense, how we could make this work.
