How to justify voting for a DH for the Hall
Suppose that after each season is played, a writer goes through each player on each team and assigns a dollar value to each player (and use say 2010 dollars, so that each team spends around 90MM$… more for the better teams, and less for the worse teams). For example, maybe in Edgar’s best season, a team would pay him say 20MM$. Do it for every season, and tell me how much Edgar’s performances would have earned him. Compare him to Dawson and Rice. Would you have paid more for Edgar’s career or Dawson’s? Rice’s?
Do that. Don’t tell me that a DH can’t make it to the Hall of Fame, or that a relief pitcher can (or can’t). Just tell me how much money you would have paid him. And then tell me why the guy you would pay 150MM$ for his career doesn’t deserve to make the HOF (Edgar), while the guy you would pay 100MM$ for his career (Rice) would.

For those who are too smart, you know I’m just talking about WAR. But, no one wants to talk about WAR. Dollars, though. We all understand that.
