How many innings can an ace reliever pitcher and still be effective?
In his post-season career, Mariano Rivera has thrown 121 innings in 131 Yankee games, spread over 204 days (thanks to reader Chris G for that last piece of research). He also has an ERA below 1.
The regular season averages around 180 days, so that’s a rate close to 105 innings per season. I know what you are going to say: he can only go for these explosive short runs one month a season. Maybe someone can ask Mariano how he physically feels about it.
