Hierarchical Pitch Classification

By Tangotiger, 10:46 AM

Chris Moore explains his model.

One thing I will note, since he compares his to MLB’s, is that MLB is doing its thing in real-time, presumably with knowledge of previous games, and presumably with the understanding/realization that the machine setup for this game might require some adjustments for the algorithm.  Chris has the benefit of hindsight and foresight in his data.

He also notes he makes “park” adjustments.  I don’t know what that means, but it really should be park-date adjustments.  It would be like Fenway moving in the Wall by 7 feet one day, and moving it back 4 feet another day, etc.
