Guinea pigs
The NHL does great things when it comes to evaluating and testing rule changes: the test and evaluate them. They often use their minor league (AHL) to introduce major new rule changes to see how things work out there. If happy, they then do it in the NHL. And then they have these little camps when prospects are invited to try things out.
I like the thing about putting the puck down first, and then blowing the whistle. What you see now is alot of wasted time where the ref holds the puck, as the two centremen anticipate the drop and already move the sticks. There’s players kicked out of the faceoff and replaced with other players. It’s really ridiculous. But, putting the puck down, and both players not moving until a whistle? Great.
And making OT a progression from 4-on-4 to 3-on-3 to 2-on-2? Great idea. I think there would be alot of icing though. What I would propose instead of 3-on-3 is that you leave it at 4-on-4, but you can only have 3 guys from the defense cross the blue line (it’s always a 4-on-3 in the attacking zone… the fourth defender is outside the blue line, waiting).
I love that they try crazy $#!+
