Gretzky rookie
I use to have alot of fun collecting cards when I was a kid. When I started following sports, I started collecting cards almost immediately. And I think the collecting part really cemented my link to baseball and hockey. At the beginning, I use to scotch tape the cards into a workbook, putting all the players by team. And to make them fit, I would also cut the cards, just so I had all the players of a team together. I stopped doing that at one point (the taping and cutting). It was with Gretzky’s rookie year. Which was pretty good luck. I still own the card, and it’s in typical shape, and nowhere near the “10” that his card just sold for. I stopped collecting sometime in high school. I got back to it for one year, near the end of university, but by then, it was this big business, with all the different companies, and the extra premium series and everything else that ripped all the joy from collecting.
By the way, that same card sold almost 5 years ago for 80,000$. Depending how much the current price included a transaction cost or not, it pretty much appreciated in value along the lines of inflation.
