Game-leadoff OBP
ESPN posted this chart, which I find surprising:
Best OBP When Leading Off Game
Since 1969 (Minimum 500 PA)
Derek Jeter .398
Willie Randolph .392
Wade Boggs .380
Kenny Lofton .380
Jose Offerman .378
I figured Rickey Henderson would be there at least. I decided to run it myself, and this is what I got, with the same minimum 500 PA (but extending back to 1952):
safe_n pa_n obp woba resp_bat_id
458 1052 0.435 0.370 ashbr101
250 595 0.420 0.429 jeted001
474 1159 0.409 0.369 yoste101
693 1705 0.406 0.380 loftk001
356 877 0.406 0.354 randw001
224 561 0.399 0.366 offej001
299 749 0.399 0.373 bufod101
233 594 0.392 0.396 downb001

1124 2875 0.391 0.373 hendr001
240 614 0.391 0.369 podss001
I include reaching on errors in my OBP. The average for all players is .345. And here’s the number of SD from the mean (no PA requirement needed):
