Gambling Escrow Account

By Tangotiger, 12:46 PM

Two years ago, I said:

I would propose a Steroids Escrow Account.  Take 50% of a player’s salary, and hold it in escrow.  If at the end of the season, he tests clean, he gets his money back.  If he doesn’t test clean, that escrow money gets distributed to the clean players.  On top of which, the unclean player then gets 100% of his next two year’s salary held in escrow.  Let him play on probation.  If he tests clean the first year, he gets the first year of escrow back.  He’s still on probation next year.

And you know what, if he tests positive a second time, I’d still let him play in the league.  This time, I’ll impose a lifetime escrow account.  Every single dollar he earns is held in escrow until retirement.  He has to remain clean to get his salary.  If he strikes out a third time, he gets nothing.  Imagine, potentially playing baseball for no money, something you’d only do if you love it.  And if you love it, you won’t take PED.  If you play for nothing, and you take PED, you deserve what you get.  Nothing.

But, this only works if players want it to work.

Well, in Taiwan, where professional baseball is at its nascent, they are facing massive drops in attendance because of suspected game-fixing.  The players, being proactive on the situation:

A players’ association said in March that up to 100 members would sign over 10 per cent of their salaries to a local bank for their retirement. If a player was convicted of intentional poor play, the bank would send the money to baseball development.

YES!!  A gambling escrow account!  Fantastic, and exactly what I would want the MLBPA to do for PED.  Now, all we need is a Holy Writer to take up this cause, rather than being at the Pearly Gates telling us whether Clemens and Bonds should or should not be considered for the Hall of Fame.

And, I like the idea that rather than the money going to the clean players, that it goes into baseball development (i.e., someone IS thinking of the children).
