From last to first
I never follow NASCAR, but I sometimes follow races involving Jacques Villeneuve or Montreal. This is basically the racing-equivalent to Hangover:
Ambrose [who would go on to win the race in Montreal] was one of three drivers who woke up in Michigan earlier in the day and made a mad dash to Montreal, arriving in time for the race.
Ambrose, Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 16 3M Ford, and Carl Edwards, No. 60 Fastenal Ford, traveled from Michigan International Speedway, where they’ll race in Sprint Cup Series event Sunday, arriving approximately 25 minutes before the start of the race.
The trio flew into a small airport in South Shore St. Hubert on Edwards’s Cessna Citation CJ1 and hopped on awaiting helicopter which whisked them to the island and then, already in their fire suits, they jumped into a speed boat to get to the start-finish area where members of their crew and their cars, which had been qualified by respective backup drivers Friday, awaited.
Because all three failed to make the mandatory pre-race drivers’ meeting, they had to start the race from the back of the grid.
Edwards finished seventh while Bayne was 17, but Ambrose twice came from the back of the field to post the win and take home $87,550 in prize money.
“It started at ten o’clock this morning with Cup Series’ practice, two hours there and to jump on a helicopter there, to jump a plane, to jump a helicopter, to jump on a boat,” said Ambrose. “It’s just been an incredible day. Have to thank Carl Edwards for letting me piggyback his plans and for everybody on the team for giving me a great opportunity.
