Friends don’t let friends tweet after death
Non-sports post.
Roger Ebert had a brilliant line:
Friends don’t let Jackasses drink and drive
It’s brilliant because of the play on word of Jackass (double-entendre for those in the blogosphere slow on the uptake), coupled with a well-known slogan.
Of course his timing was as poor as his line was brilliant, since he tweeted about this shortly after the death of Jackass star Ryan Dunn (whom I have great respect for entertaining us). That’s why Roger Ebert (whom I greatly admire as a writer and thinker) is not a comedian. His timing stinks.
You really should let those who love Dunn to grieve for him, and not have to worry about and respond to the tragic and likely self-inflicted manner of his death. And certainly not have to debate about this with Roger Ebert. Basically, you have to be human about this. Ebert sounded more like a politician here, looking to capitalize on an issue front-and-center. I know it’s a tweet, but it’s a tweet by Roger Ebert, whom I presume has more than a few followers.
I have no doubt that Roger Ebert would recite an entire negative movie review he has written in front of the face of the director of that movie on opening night.
I also have no doubt that Roger Ebert would never be able to repeat what he said in front of Ryan Dunn’s friends and family within 24 hours of Dunn’s death.
