For love of team?
Is supporting your team about love of the team’s players, or is it simply love for the sport? This fan was gaga for one player, who ended up being traded. And, the team’s GM even called the fan to explain the situation!
Now, the way I see it, the GM can’t have it both ways. He can’t ask for the fans to support the team by loving its players, and then accepting that trading of players is a business decision. At some point, in my teenage years, right around 1987-1990, when my favorite players were being moved to other teams, I realized that it makes no sense to equate the players to the team. So, out went my love for each Expos player, and in went my love for the team and whoever happened to play there. And I had extra love for Raines and a few other players. Out went my needing to support any players on the Redsox, and instead I love the Redsox for Fenway. Redsox fans will dump on Pedro and Manny as soon as it suits them fine. I don’t think that’s right. Either you love Pedro like a friend, and follow him wherever he goes (like the fan in the story linked), or you respect his talents without falling in love with him, all the while supporting the team in Fenway.
