First he is horrible, then he is a genius, then maybe he’s not such a genius…
Disclaimer: I absolutely loath Joe Maddon - not personally of course.
Or, another (of many) example(s) of why you can infer exactly ZERO about a manager from his team’s w/l record.
So, this manager compiles a 154-221 record prior to 2008, albeit with some lousy teams. Then in 2008, his team was expected to be very good (by any forecaster who knew what they were doing) and he compiles a 97-65 record, his team goes to the WS, is labeled a “genius” (at least a motivational genius) and easily wins the MOY award.
Now, unless the MOY award is actually the “manager who compiles the best record with a team that is not supposed to have the best record” award, that award should reflect some actual managerial “skill.” I would think that managerial skill should extend to other years and even other teams, right?
Now, in 2009, they were supposed to win 88 to 93 games and contend for a playoff berth. Instead, they are 19.5 games out of first place and 1 game over .500. What, he is no longer a genius?
