Expos smoke, no Expos fire
The financials don’t make sense here. You need at least 300MM$ to buy an MLB team. But, Montreal could not get a group of investors to buy the club for, what, 125MM$? Yes, things look better for Canada than the US these days (relatively speaking), which is why the Winnipeg Jets were able to sellout for the next five years, with a waiting list. And, if a team could be had for 200MM$, then, sure, I can buy the notion that Montreal is a viable candidate. But, I don’t see investors around for a 300MM$ purchase.
I’ve been out of the loop for a long while, so maybe I’m wrong. And maybe my Montreal paisans can clue me in.
Not to mention that Montreal will not have an appetite for a publicly-funded stadium. (The Hippodrome/U2 site? That’s at the cross-roads of the two highways that have the most congestion, and therefore, a horrible site. What happened to the downtown site? As far as I remember, that was a perfect site. Has there been development there for condos already?)
