Does Phil Hughes know what to do when starting in an 0-2 count?
Larry points out that, lately, he’s not doing too well there. Indeed, since 2010, he’s not been well at all in that count (237 PA). I don’t have access to all my data to see how significant that is.
I can tell you that, career-wise, out of the 873 pitchers I have in my database (through 2009 I think), only 1 pitcher was below the overall league average in wOBA, when starting at an 0-2 count. That was Dewon Brazelton. And he has about the same number of PA as Hughes does (2010-2011) when starting at that count, and his split stats look a bit like Hughes does. So, it’s possible that Hughes may be the worst pitcher in the league when starting at that count. Brazelton has an excuse of course: he was a terrible pitcher to begin with, so that he was also terrible at 0-2 is no surprise.
Phil Hughes was forecasted to be at Stephen Strasburg’s level, before Strasburg showed up. This game can eat anyone up.
