Do TV commentators pay any attention to the game?
Some of you may tire of my media criticisms, but in tonight’s Yankee game in the top of the 5th, the Yankees had runners on 1st and 3rd and no outs. They scored one in the inning. When they returned from the commercial break, one of the announcers, and the other agreed, said that Hellickson did a good job getting out of the inning allowing only one run. Now technically he did just that (get out of the inning allowing only 1 run). However, if you watched the game you know exactly what I am going to say.
With no outs, Granderson squared up a fat pitch for a line drive/one hop ground ball, which looked like a sure single up the middle. However the SS was playing up the middle and turned it into an easy run scoring DP. The next batter, Cano, also took a first pitch fastball right down the middle and drilled one to RF. It looked like a HR or double off the bat. Unfortunately for the Yankees and their fans, it was hit right to the RF’er who was playing deep.
Couldn’t these wise commentators say something like, “Hellickson was lucky to get out of the inning giving up only one run,” rather than, “He did a good job?” Clearly he did not do a good job, other than the fact that he did get out of the inning (allowing only one run)…
