Do character-guys age better?
I don’t know. Just something that popped into my head as I see David Eckstein and Craig Counsell hitting HR, still playing at an overall average level, many years after hitting their supposed peak, and Willie Bloomquist still performing at replacement-level every year for the past few years.
Maybe this is what scouts talk about when they talk about character guys. That, sure, maybe Eck and Counsell are not the best ballplayers coming out of school, and even in their 20s, their not stars, but “character” keeps them from doing more with their bodies than other ballplayers, whose skillset, passion, or whatever, erodes on them.
Or maybe this is just confirmation bias?
