Computer v Human Umpires

By Tangotiger, 11:03 AM

BtB lays out their case.

In my opinion, the computer will make the better call on the fringes a bit better.  The computer will make the worse call on the “gimmes”.  That is, a miscalibration, a hiccup, or whatnot, may lead to a situation when an intentional ball could be called a strike.  And as a PITCHf/x-er pointed out last year or so (John Walsh?), that is exactly what happened.

The gimme call, like we saw in the Cards/Royals World Series where the batter was out by two steps but called safe, is terrible from a human, but somehow we can live with it.  Having more than one of those from a computer would doom it.

The best system, so far, is still the human umpire, as long as they go over the PITCHf/x reports on a daily basis to see what they called, and whether they show biases on the fringes.
