Your team’s optimal batting order

By Tangotiger, 01:14 PM

Rather than create a thread for each team, I should have just started one thread for all the teams.

Bloggers speak:
Phillies.

Is the Todd Frohwirth who wrote that blog the under-arming relief pitcher who spent the early 90s with the O’s?

Never mind that, I see that his profile has his name listed in quotations, guessing its a psuedonym.

By the way, I got a ton of hits from this site for the survey.  Thanks Peter…

Posted this at the CAC site, but will ask it here instead. It’s about the relative importance of the number 3 hitter, saying that on average he sees none-on, two-out situations more, hence he’s not as important as the number 2,4 and 5 hitters. However, if you optimise the line-up as suggested, with much more emphasis on OBP in the top-two spots, as opposed to say speed and singles hitters, wouldn’t the number 3 hitter now see more opportunities to hit with runners on than before, hence his importance should be more than the 4 and 5 hitters? Just speaking from experience of watching Braves games and seeing Chipper’s role be more important when Heyward was hitting 2nd as opposed to some other hitter.

And in a related manner, why wouldn’t you just construct your line-up with the best hitters batting 1-9, seeing as the number 1 hitter would get more AB? (Taking a practice employed in cricket, where outside of opening the batting, they basically construct their batting order like that). Or perhaps I should just order “The Book” to see what is going on.
Thanks.
