wOBA online

By Tangotiger, 10:18 AM

Stat Corner is a new site by friends of The Book Matthew Carruth and Graham MacAree.  It looks like they are focusing on presenting stats you can’t find elsewhere, so that’s good.

Since they are just starting out, and seem to be willing to try new things, I think they’ll be open to suggestions.  Here are mine after first use:
1. The team page should list their special stats for 2008, and make their names hyperlinked.  Right now, just their names are hyperlinked.  No reason for me to go one player at a time on the same team.

2. The team info page should also be present under a league page, so we can see those numbers in context.  Things should flow hierarchically (league, team, player), with information on each page.

3. Make the headings clickable or hoverable, so we can see what they mean.

4. On the Pitch data page, each year should be clickable to have further drill down.  In fact, Matthew at THT had presented such stats in an article.  It’s a great presentation, and I’d hope to see it here some day.

That’s all for now.  Good luck guys!

I’m not sure why, but minor league players come up in the search but without stats. And not just guys on the 40-man roster. If the creators don’t want MiLB stats, I’d just eliminate the minor league players from the search.

Also, a hovering glossary would be helpful… like what BP does with their in-article stats, if that’s possible.

Oh, I see now… Minor league stats coming soon. Forget the first part of what I said above.

Yeah, this looks like a very neat site. Is their wOBA park adjusted?

Tom, what is your opinion on their pitching stat (tRA)?

Check the blog archives, and point a link back here.  I’m pretty sure I talked about it already, but I’ll need a refresher.

Talked about it a bit here:
http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/batted_ball_dips/

Seems to me it should be an improvement over fip/xfip/etc.

Also, there’s a good explanation in the glossary section.

Ok, I remember a bit now.  Thanks for the link.  Seems like the standard FIP-type pitching stat, using batted ball data, which is usually a good thing.

I asked a few questions in the Lookout Landing thread, but they might be better asked here:

How many wins would you assign for each plate appearance to convert runs above average to runs above replacement?  I know Sean Smith goes with two wins per 700 PAs.  Is that accurate enough?  What’s the reasoning?  Is it really 2.25 so 2 for NL and 2.5 for AL?  (And is 700 PAs a good estimate for a “full season” for using Tango’s position adjustments?)

Given the five run gap between NL and AL performance, how does that translate into points of wOBA?

Thanks for the plug Tango!

And absolutely we’re open to all suggestions and yours are terrific. It’s definitely some stuff that I’m planning on getting to (boy there’s a lot that goes into building a site like this) and some I had not yet thought of, but they all sound like good ideas.

Also, to head anyone off at the pass, yes, sortable leaderboards are coming too.

Dan, yeah, I plan to have a hovering tooltips for the stats as well as having them clickable to the glossary in time as well.

Hyltzn, currently no, but that’s high on the docket to present both a wOBA and a park-adjusted (using Gassko’s factors) wOBA.

Thanks (I was the one who e-mailed you, btw). Very neat site, and it’s getting some notoriety already.

Oh, yeah, they also have a primer to tRA linked in their glossary, if anyone is interested.
