Who or What is moot?

By Tangotiger, 01:44 PM

Non-sports post.

Time.com asked for feedback on who is the most influential in the world.  (The character played by) Self-promoter Stephen Colbert finished fourth, which is great for (the actual person) Stephen Colbert.  But ahead of him (which is a fantastic feat until itself): Rain (South Korean pop star), moot (I have no idea), and Manny Pacquiao (Filipino fighter).  Apologies (for all the parens).

I think it’s got to do with “4chan”, which is some kind of IRC or message board place where a bunch of teenagers show their individuality by all doing the same thing.  Usually, they all just stuff an online ballot or harass someone or something.  If you’re familiar with Google Trends, a while back they found the character code to display a swastika, so a bunch of them searched for it on Google, making it turn up in Hot Trends for that day.  Anyways, I think “moot” is the guy who built the bulletin board.

Click on my name, although the story I read seems different.

It’s really sad that only 16 year olds read Time these days.

Mike (#1) has is pretty much right. Moot started 4chan, a group of message boards which have become the center of Internet culture.

Colbert is interesting to me. He’s basically Jon Stewart #2, but because Jon Stewart is already pretty good at being (presumably) himself, Colbert’s gimmick is that of the anti-Stewart. Except everything is so laced with irony and sarcasm, I’m not sure it’s really a character. Isn’t the real Colbert one who jokes and takes not-so-subtle shots at conservatives with backhanded compliments?

If you look at the first initials of the first 20 or so finishers on the Time site, it spells out “MARBLECAKE ALSO THE GAME” which was completely intentional on 4chan’s part. (as shown by that blog post, which I have read before and is quite interesting) The power of motivated hackers is unbelievable.

I’m talking about here:
