What was Joe Girardi thinking?

By Tangotiger, 08:42 PM

Would you rather have Mariano Rivera batting (of a tie game, with TWO outs) and then pitching the next inning, or would you rather send in a PH, and then bring in your third best reliever?

Let me show you a quick way to figure that out using Leverage Index.  If you go here, you will see the LI is 0.4.  Remember that.  Now, the average pitcher-as-a-batter is roughly -.15 runs per PA.  We have to figure Mo is a little bit worse.  Let’s make him -.20 runs per PA.  UPDATE (I forgot to do this part, but I was putting my kid to bed.  You have to take the -.20 and multiply by 0.4, to make it -.08 runs).

As a pitcher, Mo is fantastic, say somewhere between 1.5 and 2 runs per 9IP better than the next best option on the Yanks.  That’s roughly .20 runs per IP.  The LI to start the bottom of a tied inning is 2.3.  That makes his impact the equivalent of .46 runs.

As you can see, a huge difference here.  So, you let Mo bat, for sure.  (Otherwise, in a typical inning, it’s a breakeven play.)

I didn’t know Rivera was due up, and I assumed they’d take him out. Rivera threw a lot of pitches in his last outing, spanning 2.1 innings. He could have been too tired for all we know.

I thought the bigger mistake was taking out Robertson with two outs in the 11th. He had just gotten two outs and wasn’t in any kind of trouble. Everyone I was watching with at the time was wondering the same thing.

When you consider the guy sent up to hit (Cervelli) is an awful hitter, it really becomes a slam dunk to let Mo hit. The latest ZiPS has Cervelli at .244/.297/.347 which is about -.07 runs per PA.

Rivera threw a lot of pitches in his last outing, spanning 2.1 innings.

He threw 25 pitches in that outing, something he’s done five times this season. He’s also had another 5 outings of 23 or 24 pitches.

Maybe he was tired, but I don’t think his 7-out appearance from about 42 hours ago is clear proof of fatigue.

You know I am as critical as anyone about moves like that, but I think that he didn’t want to stretch Mo.  If he really wanted to pitch Mo the next inning, he would have let him bat.

Now, taking out Robertson with two outs…

See my new thread above.

I’m not saying I KNOW he was fatigued. But I know all the media members were asking him if he’d be ok to pitch, so maybe there’s something to that line of thinking.

When Rivera batted against the Mets in June (or July), he was under orders not to swing. He did, though (fouling a pitch). The team’s behavior then suggested they feared him getting hurt while batting or running the bases. I imagine similar thinking went into the decision today since Rivera and Girardi had said he could face at least four batters today.

I figured they would have left Damon, not give up the DH if Rivera was going to go another inning.  Girardi probably didn’t want to go back to back 2 inning efforts, especially with another game tomorrow.

Mo looked amazingly good at the plate in that AB against the Mets; ended up walking with the bases loaded...for purely aesthetic reasons I wanted to see Mo bat:  he’s such a great athlete (though the throw to 3rd was not good at all)

The better question is why Gardner was used as a pinch runner in the game instead of the team’s designated pinch runner, Guzman. That’s why he wasn’t available to take the field for Damon, forcing Girardi to give up his DH.
