What do the Fans think of the AL gold glove recipients (not winners)?

By Tangotiger, 05:13 PM

Let’s see:

Mauer: 2nd best fielding catcher, and first in AL .... no issue here
Teixeira: 2nd best in MLB, first in AL… no issue here
Polanco: 6th best in MLB, 3rd in AL… defensible (Ellis, Pedroia, Hill all reasonable choices too)
Jeter: I’ve got him on page 3, so, that’s not good… Andrus and Aybar best bets
Longoria: 4th best in MLB and AL… defensible (Beltre, Inge reasonable choices)
Ichiro: possibly best fielder in baseball, regardless of position
Torii: 13th best CF in MLB, 4th in AL… defensible, if only because you can vote 3 CF for the gold glove
Adam Jones: page 2 for CF, which is good, just not great… Gutierrez and BJ Upton better bets

All-in-all, not an embarrassing list.  The pick the fans have the most problem with, Jeter, had a +9 UZR, which is pretty good.

Mauer was a better fielder than Laird?

The Fans had it Yadier Molina (NL), Mauer, Laird, in that order.  Obviously, if they are that close, there’s enough uncertainty to say that Laird is better than Mauer, especially if Laird plays 17 more games than Mauer did as catcher.

Now what about the NL?  No Chase Utley, no Nyjer Morgan?  Those just seem so damned obvious.

The outfield for the NL isn’t all that bad, to be honest. Bourn was probably pretty good this year, Kemp was probably OK. Victorino doesn’t sound right to me, and Morgan most certainly should be in there.

Had a piece I wrote yesterday for Beyond the Box Score on figuring a defensive projection for the GG winners vs. the top UZR count for the year (click my name). The voters weren’t terrible in the AL, as mentioned here. I’ll be writing the NL up very soon.

Tango, I’ve got a post blocked by the spam filter with a link to an article I put up for BtB.
