Water consumption during gold medal game

By Tangotiger, 07:15 PM

80% of Canada was watching the game.  That means 25 million people are going to hate Bettman forever if he messes with the 2014 games, something all the athletes are willing to play for free, and Bettman is going to hold as a bargaining chip.

That’s a very cool graph.

Is anyone else wondering if the area under the 27-Feb curve is greater than the area under the 28-Feb curve?  I think Canada just experienced a mass dehydration event from which it may never recover.  “Dehydration is linked to shortened life span, increased incidence of skin breakdown, delayed wound healing and pneumonia.”

"water consumption” refers more to bathroom usage, not the actual drinking of water.

What is really interesting to me is that the greatest drops in water consumption for each regular period came right before the end of the period, indicating that people were increasingly willing to wait for the end of the period to do their business as they got closer to the end of the period.

I realized that was the case after I made my post.

As a Tufte apprentice, although I find the graph fascinating and well done, I do note that the vertical scale is somewhat confusing.  Canadians did not quit going to the bathroom at the end of the third period; they cut back by 30% or so.  It took me a little while to realize that.

i’m interested, how much would Canadian fans sacrifice their favorite team’s chances at winning a stanley cup for an olympic gold?  i know baseball doesnt have anything close to an equivalent world wide trophy but that deal is a tough sell for me.  and as for the hockey, i’d take a last place in the olympics for team USA if it meant a stanley cup for the devils.  but thats me.

I’ll take an Oilers Cup over an Olympic gold any day of the week.  Much tougher trophy to win and I have more emotional investment in the Oil.  Team Canada is like a two week fling every four years; the Oilers are a life partner, albeit one that doesn’t treat me very well.
