I haven’t visited USSM for a couple of days so I am ELATED to get this news.

I’ve known Dave since the old Mariners usenet newsgroup days of the late 1990s and early 2000s, and he is one of the kindest, smartest guys you’ll ever meet.  That doesn’t ALWAYS come across in his responses to people online, which I think is directly related (and perhaps inversely proportional to) his prolific output and simply not having the time to patiently and painstakingly respond to every ill-informed whos throws an evidence-free opinion out on the blogosphere.

Thank God I met him when he DID have the time.  wink And if you had the privilege of talking baseball with Dave in person, he might disagree with you just as vehemently, but you would never get the sense that he is anything but the caring, kind person that he REALLY is.

Dave is somebody who has played a HUGE role in my sabermetric education as a baseball fan, and for that I am very, very grateful.  [And while I am at it, to Tango and MGL and all the people here at The Book Blog, too....] I am even MORE grateful to know that Dave has kicked this thing back, and I can look forward to many more years reading and admiring his work.

Way to go, Dave!
