The Sabermetric Awards

By Tangotiger, 12:55 PM

BtB is launching sabermetric awards.  For those of you old enough to remember “The Primeys”, Baseball Primer did the same thing for 2 or 3 years.  A catchy name would be nice.  Anyway, Reds’ Justin seems to be in charge.

Upcoming threads will be launched where you can submit your nominations.

It shouldn’t be that hard to call them the Sabres and get some graphic designer to create a nice-looking logo to serve as a virtual “trophy” for the winners.

Funny… back when I was starting my website (Tangotiger.net), I was thinking something like:

Saber-toothed Tiger

***

The Buffalo Sabres (original design) have, to me, the best logo of any pro team ever.

To actually incorporate the bull and the sword, and do it so well, and with the blue they chose, was perfect.

I am shocked that they actually changed their design several years ago.  I hope that Sabres fans were as outraged then as I am now.

If I were to make a logo, I’d use something like that, but replace the animal with a (possibly dancing) tiger.

For those that are interested, the first nominating thread has been opened, for nomination of the Best Novel Research Article or Project. I can’t wait to see what the readers have for us.

Hmmm… looks like Ralph is blocking access to the image directly, unless going through google?  Anyway, here’s the logo:

Justin: perhaps in the main thread you introduced, you can edit that thread and add the links (like this one), so it acts as a one-stop-shop?

Thanks for the link!  We’ll see how this goes.  Could be a lot of fun.

Tango/5, good idea, will do. -j

Tango - IIRC Sabres fans were ticked, especially since they also changed the classic colors to the way-overused red/black combo.  The originals were sweet sweet unis, and the banana smear thing just makes a mockery of things.  So glad they’re using the original logo again as an alternate.

(I’ve always loved the Hartford Whalers logo too.)

Tango/2:

I believe that the Sabres will be going back to that logo full time in 2010-2011 season. However, it’s probably going to be the navy/gold color scheme that they have now with the semi-modernized old sabre logo. That sucks. I hate that NHL teams have strayed (like NFL teams ... see: St. Louis Rams) to such a navy/gold color scheme over their old blue/yellow (like the Blues or the Sabres, for instance. Or NYI or EDM with orange instead of yellow) the last few years. No need to change those jerseys. I wish more teams were like the Wings or Devils and just stick with what works for the most part (though the Devils are apparently going to bring back the Red/Green but it’ll be their current jerseys and the green will replace the black. Yuck.)

Today is the last day to submit & second nominations.  Here’s a hub post for the day.

Thanks again for the link.

I saw a few of them, and I pretty much liked all the suggestions.  There were no “??” links that I saw.

I’d think you should use your discretion to second anything that hasn’t been seconded yet, in a category that is low on nominations.

Are you going with 4-6 nominations, or are you going longer?

#12    Michael      (see all posts) 2010/01/11 (Mon) @ 15:30

Tango, in discussion prior to release, we were discussing 10 nominations for the award. I believe we have enough for Novel Research, more than enough for Sabermetrician, and lacking a few in the other categories.

#13    jinaz      (see all posts) 2010/01/11 (Mon) @ 15:48

I don’t want to go over 10 nominations, except maybe for the best writer award where it may be as much a popularity contest as anything else.  I think we’re ok in most categories, though I’d prefer to have more than four choices as much as possible.

Cheers,
Justin

No way the Buffalo Sabres have the best logo. The St. Louis Blues and St. Louis Rams both have nice logos. All the old school Rams logos are on here.
