The MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference is coming!

By , 09:19 PM

It is time, once again, for the Sloan MIT Sports Analytics Conference! The only requirement to attend is that you must be able to type the word “analytics” in one second or less. Just kidding. Here is the official web site:

http://www.sloansportsconference.com/

The dates are March 2-3, in Boston of course.

It is a little pricey (if you are a current student anywhere, it is a steal), but if you are serious about your sports analytics, you want to stump for a job with a team, or you want to meet some truly interesting and sometimes brilliant personalities, you should seriously consider attending. There might even be an MGL sighting in the audience.

This is the Super Bowl of Sports Analytics conferences and is a veritable who’s who in the sports analysis and sports world.

Here are some of the speakers:

Bill James
Mark Cuban
Mark Shapiro
Jeff Luhnow
Darrel Morey
John Hollinger
Scott Boras
Bill Simmons

And more…

Why do people make student act as a synonym for college student?  As far as I’m concerned, my occupation is student and I’m ‘only’ in High School.  Cant people be more specific when they want to be exclusionary?

On the registration page, it says you must have a “.edu” email address.  Does your high school have that?

Now, when you register, it did look like you have to be college, but it’s not clear to me that you must be college.

Why don’t you call and ask?

No, we don’t have any sort of school email at all.  And unfortunately I can’t go that weekend, but its more of a general gripe than a targeted one.

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like a Sports Analytics conference would have fewer big names and more, you know, analysts?

I’m sure there will be some interesting discussions, but I’d be shocked based on the speaker list if there will be a lot of deep analysis on the docket.

But I suppose I’d prefer more SABR or the PitchF/X Summit to something like this.

I’ve never been to it before, but I have heard good things, Dan. It is not exactly that kind of conference though. It is not necessarily hard core analysis.  I assume they are trying to cater to a wider (read: not as cheap as saberists wink) audience…

I’ve been impressed by the video presentations they’ve made available.

I definitely wouldn’t knock it, until at least trying it.

Is Simmons going to break down the latest developments in pop culture reference R&D?

I graduated college 35 years ago, but I have an .edu account.  Go figure.

Dan - The premier speakers are always lined up first and the hard core analysts come later. They will end up on the panels if the past 5 conferences are any indication. Plus, the research paper track is where most of the heavy lifting (analysis-wise) happens.

Thanks guys,

It’s definitely hard to decide whether to beg my wife to allow me to go based on the speakers they’ve got listed. I’ll go back and see if I can find some more coverage of previous years.

MGL, I know it’s a bit of a hike for you, but are you heading to SABR day in Cooperstown?

#11    MGL      (see all posts) 2012/01/16 (Mon) @ 16:48

Dan, nah, way too far for me (I’m in Nevada during the winter)…

That I did not know.

Must be nice to avoid the upstate NY snow.

I have two students going, paying the student rate, but being from Canada, we don’t use .edu domain names.

These guys will even miss a midterm exam!  Guess why I can’t attend, beside the cost?
