The fielding highlight reel

By Tangotiger, 03:54 PM

Scott Rolen.

There must be Ichiro-, Everett-, and Ellis-lovers out there, too, no?  Where is their catalog of best-fielding plays?  Why is there not a catalog of such plays for EVERY player in MLB?  If I’m working at MLBAM, every play made is tagged with a score, and then, I have a list that shows the best-to-worst plays for every player.

Glove-slap: Neyer.

That arm is amazing.

Several years ago MLBAM advertised that a subscriber to their video service was going to be able to call up specific plays by querying fielder, batter or pitcher.  I thought GREAT!, just the thing for analytical work.  Then they announced a delay, and then it never happened.  I still think a special Analyst Video package that offered that capability and all the archived games with the choice if you wanted live games or not would be perfect for us.  I’d like to time batters running to first so I subscribed to the off-season package this winter.  But if I could call up all the plays by batter and double play, it would make doing that kind of research so much easier.  Are you out there listening Corey?

MLB could follow the example of the NBA and let the fans create and post online their own highlight videos of their favorite players/teams.  Do a youtube search for “Albert Pujols top plays”, then do one for “Kobe Bryant top plays”.  There isn’t a 12-year-old sports fan with an internet connection in America that hasn’t seen a series of LeBron James’ best dunks strung together with hip-hop playing in the background.  Sometimes I wonder if all of MLB’s harsh copyright policing is really in their best interest in the long run.
