Thank you for 2011

By Tangotiger, 05:09 PM

I just want to say thanks to everyone who has contributed to this blog.  I am very appreciative of not only your contributions, but also of how you comport yourselves.  It’s a pleasure to be here, and read all your comments, knowing that I rarely have to wade through any sludge, even though there’s no user registration.  Below you will find the list of every contributor (and the number of posts made in 2011… when in doubt, I always add numbers).  Again, I really appreciate how thoughtful you guys have been, and I will strive to continue to make this place a worthwhile destination.

And if anyone thinks they post too much (I know I think I post way too much), stop that crazy talk.

This blog is a shadow of what it would otherwise be without you guys.

You’re welcome! (make that 21)

Aww, thanks, Tango! <3

It’s a power law distribution. I demand government action to reduce the disparity between the top 1% commenters and the rest of us!

Make that 10 for me.

#4    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/28 (Wed) @ 19:25

That’s funny… there’s almost 1300 commenters, so the one percenters contributed nearly 50% of the comments.

#5    Xeifrank      (see all posts) 2011/12/28 (Wed) @ 20:52

I’m #24, which means I am probably bowl eligible.

#6    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/28 (Wed) @ 21:19

Haha… that would be funny… nominate the best post from each of the top 16 commenters (excluding me and MGL), and do brackets.  We’ll end up with the post of the year.

#7    Devon      (see all posts) 2011/12/28 (Wed) @ 22:01

I’m gonna have to remember to use just 1 nickname next year, ‘cause I apparently commented 84 times already, but used about 5 or 6 variations LOL

Non sequitor, but have you ever thought of using nested comments?
Anyways, my 2 comments don’t hold a candle to the thousands that I’ve read this year.

Thanks to you for providing this content free of charge for another year!

I just want to point out that it’s quality, not quantity, that counts.  I’m looking at you, Wyers!

I can’t stand nested comments.

I saw a comment at SB Nation that said my comment system here stinks, but I thought quite the same about theirs!

So, to each his own.

In my case, I read ALL the comments, so, I need something time-based.

For others, who jump in and out, maybe nested makes more sense.

You’re welcome. I am tied with KJOK and one ahead of David Pinto! Probably the only time I will ever rise to their level (but I actually often split what I had to say up into multiple comments on purpose so I could rise in the rankings)

46 Cyril Morong ; 46 KJOK ; 45 dan ; 45 David Pinto

Tango, thank YOU for a great year!  I like that you do a lot of different kinds of posting, and that it’s accessible for a lot of varieties of readers.  And I mentioned you in a seminary classroom this year, which is probably a first for you (we were talking about how people process/interpret information, and I talked about how you always seem to mine data whenever possible).  Also, did you see this?

http://www.fangraphs.com/community/index.php/was-woba-actually-invented-nearly-100-years-ago/

Worth reading, for sure.

And there are some other articles buried in the comments with some other interesting Frank Lane info.  Check it out.

Thanks for the kind words.

As for FC Lane:

I posted a couple of pages from FC Lane’s book on batting where he discusses lineups

It gives the lineup theories of several managers from back then

Tango, SBN has a great system (if you have an account and are a member of each individual site) where new comments are marked in yellow. You can press ‘z’ to jump to the next new comment and mark it as read. So you get the best of both world’s—nested/grouped comments and the ability to read every comment without repeating much.

#17    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/29 (Thu) @ 11:04

Sky:

That looks promising, so I tried it.  I went to a random thread here:

http://www.draysbay.com/2011/12/17/2643065/red-gets-latos

I tried all this and nothing happened:

Press C to tab to new comments, Shift-C to tab backwards, X to mark as read, and Shift-A to mark all read.
The best: Z will simultaneously mark and tab forward, and R will reply to the comment that has focus.

#18          (see all posts) 2011/12/29 (Thu) @ 11:21

Not to nitpick, but how much control do you have over the email notifications for new comments? It would be nice if they linked directly to the new comment and said who posted them…

#19    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/29 (Thu) @ 11:26

I haven’t looked at the software for a few years now.  It’s the same system that Hardball Times and Primer uses.  So, if they can do it, then I can do it.

#20    David MIck      (see all posts) 2011/12/29 (Thu) @ 12:20

I agree with Tango about threaded comments. I absolutely hate them. If there’s a worst thing ever invented for online discussion it is threaded comments in my opinion. If there is a way to sort comments on various sites the default should always be the flat layout.

#21    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/29 (Thu) @ 12:36

Fangraphs for example gives you the option to toggle between threaded and flat.

But even with threaded, Fangraphs limits the nesting to like 3-deep, because you get to a point where if you allow more than that, it’s hard to link up the post to the sub-thread.

In any case, this is a matter of OPINION.  And with opinions, no one is right or wrong.  You simply present your case.  I promise you that everyone is not alone in their opinion.  As long as you can get say 5% of people to agree with you, then I think any opinion is a worthy opinion.

As a for instance, Strasburg, Felix, and Kershaw got some 15% to 45% for “best pitcher to give a 4-yr deal to”.  That tells me that you can make a reasonable case for any of the three, and there’s no point in arguing against any of the selections.  With Yu Darvish, he got such a small number that I think that you would have to make an overwhelming compelling case to justify him.

Threaded, deep-threaded, or flat… they are all reasonable as the best-layout.

Unfortunately for most of you out there, the decision here is a personal one… mine!  So, regardless of what people may actually want, I have to stick to what appeals to me.

thanks for provided so many great posts and great discussions! didn’t think i would end up so high on the list. must be all the game of thrones and comic book threads!

looking forward to 2012. one of the best things about this blog is it brings so many thoughtful people together. even in disagreements i feel like im always learning something. makes me want to elevate my commenting game, just in hopes of keeping up. happy new years everyone!

Another thing is that comments at SB Nation are fairly terse, while we get fairly verbose here (especially with MGL’s one-sentence paragraphs!).

On top of THAT, we also quote within posts.

So, imagine a threaded system that goes 5-deep, and inside that chain, you also get quoted posts.  And within that chain, you get very long posts.

I’m talking like a programmer at this point, where you don’t want to see stuff like that.  In programming, you would make a “function call”.  Basically, you spin off part of the chain into a separate process, and you “call” that process from within the chain.  That’s how you make the code clean, and you don’t have to worry about what level in the nesting you are in.  You try to make things self-contained as much as possible, and try to limit nests from building.

SBNation posts are fairly terse, so, they don’t get into that situation.  It’s easy to jump to the next nest, because you can actually see the new sub-thread on the same page.  That wouldn’t happen here.

#24    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/29 (Thu) @ 13:01

A few more points:
1. I keep the width of the comment space to about 500 pixels, much narrower than SB Nation.

2. I also have the font-size much bigger.

I do that on purpose, because I want to be able to scan-read easily.  It’s impossible to scan-read at SBNation.  But again, because their comments are fairly terse, if you scan-read there, you’d miss several posts altogether.

Anyway, the system here serves its purpose, just as it may serve its purpose at SB Nation.

A lot of credit goes to you and MGL for actually participating in the discussions. With many sites, the authors may drop in for a drive-by comment every once and a while, but you both really engage, which is one reason I keep coming back (and which may now motivate you to stop doing so wink ).

***

I also dislike nested comments, especially for 50+ post threads, but I’ve suggested a “like” or +/- feature before. It seems like it’d be a useful little tool. Have you avoided implementation of that because it might lead to a more jingoistic sort of environment?

#26    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/29 (Thu) @ 19:55

I haven’t updated this software in years.  So the answer is that I’m just really lazy about it.

As for Tango/MGL participation: right, I don’t know why other blog owners don’t participate alot more with their readers.  Between me and MGL, I think we’re 1/4th to 1/3rd of all posts.  It seems high to me, but at the least it should be 1/10th.  I think.

#27          (see all posts) 2011/12/30 (Fri) @ 01:41

Just wondering, what type of captcha system do you use, because I really like it?

#28    David MIck      (see all posts) 2011/12/30 (Fri) @ 11:15

Out of curiosity, is Guy still around here? I enjoyed his contributions, but I never see him comment anymore.

#29    Hank G      (see all posts) 2011/12/30 (Fri) @ 12:06

And thank you for providing such an enjoyable and informative site. I’m sure that it is the examples set by you and MGL that keep the overall quality and civility of the comments high.

I also appreciate that despite my not being able to follow some of the mathematics, you still manage to provide a lot of content that I find interesting.

I plotted the posting data and it made a nice exponential-looking curve.

#30    tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/12/30 (Fri) @ 13:14

Guy seems to come in and out.  I’ve “known” him since the old Baseball Boards days.  Good times, good guy.

#31    joe arthur      (see all posts) 2011/12/30 (Fri) @ 16:49

I think the rhythms of Guy’s professional life must keep him too busy for commentary at times. I always look forward to his comments as well.

Just want to add my thanks to you for providing this great interactive space.  This is the most intelligent space I’ve found anywhere on the internet.  Thanks.
