Tangotiger = ESPN Blogger

By Tangotiger, 05:55 PM

Yes, it’s true.  My first blog post is “How much is Derek Jeter worth?" Here’s the peamble:

Derek Jeter is entering the final season of a 10-year, $189 million contract he signed in 2001, and every baseball fan is wondering the same thing: How big will his next contract be? To answer that, we need to figure out how good we think he will be from 2011 onward. One way to determine this is to use a metric called WAR (Wins Above Replacement), which I helped develop and accounts for hitting, fielding and baserunning. BaseballProjection.com has the annual WAR for all players through 2009, and the numbers can be used to put Jeter’s future value in context.

It’s only for ESPN subscribers.  However, if I create a pay-site on Tangotiger.net, I can post my blog there as well.  I’ll measure the temperature on that one tomorrow to see if I should bother selling my soul.  I’ve got a couple of ideas on that, and hopefully one of them will be good.

I expect to make a couple of blog posts a week for them.  I already have one in the pipeline for Wednesday.  These are going to be 250-500 word blog posts.

Selling out to the establishment! Going behind a pay-wall! Horrors!

Seriously, this is a good move for you. Congratulations.

Congratulations. Hope this goes well for you and brings more opportunities your way.

Next to BP? Sell out. Not free? Sell out.

#4    JDSussman      (see all posts) 2010/03/01 (Mon) @ 21:10

Tango,

Nice move! Now I have to consider if I want ESPN or BP. Yikes…

I just launched a site today. Check it out. Bullpenbanter.com

Congrats, Tango.  This is indeed a good move for you and for ESPN.

#6    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/01 (Mon) @ 21:26

JD, it’s too early for me.  Let’s see how it goes.

#7    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/01 (Mon) @ 21:35

Thanks guys, let’s see how this plays out, if what we do will make any impact, or if we’ll be stuck in our little corner.

Wow, Tom, that’s a lot of compartments in that brain of yours, how are you going to keep it all straight?

Anyway, congratulations!

#9    J. Cross      (see all posts) 2010/03/01 (Mon) @ 22:23

Congrats!  I’m looking forward to it.

I don’t know how you find time to do all this stuff.

#10    Jeff Z      (see all posts) 2010/03/01 (Mon) @ 23:02

Congrats, hope the world wide leader sends a little money for the honey your way.

#11    Kent Bonham      (see all posts) 2010/03/01 (Mon) @ 23:18

Congrats Tom! It’s great that your ideas and work will get even wider exposure. Good luck.

#12    Zach      (see all posts) 2010/03/01 (Mon) @ 23:36

I don’t have ESPN insider, so I can’t read the Jeter article. Are these articles gonna be sabermetric-heavy, or sabermetrics 101?

#13    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 01:15

Zach, see post 7.

#14    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 08:38

I was all set to try to set up something to squeeze all the money out of your wallets, when I saw a link to just an incredible deal.  If you used to have ESPN, then $1 a year.  If you are new, then $4 a year.  Just use the coupon code and you are set.
$4: http://www.slickdeals.net/blog/index.php/2010/02/27/espn-magazine-w-insider-4year-muscle-fitness-4year/
$1: http://www.slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1713259

So, there you go.  It’s a ridiculously low offer.

#15          (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 12:46

Thanks for the link Tom.  The only problem I have is that now I have to throw away so many magazines.  What a waste.

#16    Mike Fast      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 12:53

Steven/15, my thoughts exactly.  The poor trees that give their lives for that rag.  I’ve seen some bad publishing in my time, but that takes the cake.

#17    Josh      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 16:32

I’ll pay whatever you’re charging. All the best.

#18          (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 16:44

Just so everyone knows, it doesn’t look like you get insider access right away when you sign up.  In fact, it says that you don’t have access until you receive your first magazine, which can take 6 weeks.  I don’t know if it will really take that long though…

#19    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 17:00

Josh, thanks.

I won’t be charging anything since you’ve got $4 for a year of ESPN Insider, which also gets you BPro and Fangraphs Insider articles

***

I was going to crreate a Tangotiger Newsletter, and charge a one-time lifetime fee for charter members of, I dunno, $20?  50$?  After that, I would have done that price point as an annual fee.

But, I really didn’t want to get into that if I didn’t have to.

#20    Guy      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 17:09

Finally accessed it.  Nice post.  One suggestion for this (relatively) mass audience:  a couple examples can really strengthen your arguments.  In this case, you might have shown a couple players who were productive at age 32-35 but then fell off a cliff.  I’m not arguing that you substitute anecdotes for data (like you ever would), but illustrations can help less-stat-savy fans to see your points.

#21    Patriot      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 17:13

I would much rather pay $50 to Tango than pay 5 cents to ESPN.  Perhaps my hatred for ESPN is irrational, but I absolutely refuse to support them.

#22    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 17:28

Guy, agreed.  I was given a 250-500 limit, and what I submitted was a bit over 500 words, and they chopped off a few sentences from that.

They even took out the part that I had to exclude Dimaggio and Clemente from the sample because, well, you know.  So, it’s a tough thing.  It’s like the WSJ pieces, where word limits take priority.

#23    JDSussman      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 17:33

Tango,

Stupid question… Why is there a word limit for an blog post on the internet?

#24    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/02 (Tue) @ 18:02

Probably something to do with short attention spa…

#25    Mike Fast      (see all posts) 2010/03/03 (Wed) @ 13:18

Google Reader worked for me to see the whole article yesterday.  Today I only get a brief paragraph for both this article and the Mauer one in Google Reader. :(

#26    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/03/03 (Wed) @ 13:32

Hmmm… I wonder how long Insider has been free via Reader and I wonder how many people are going to be upset at me for mentioning it.
