Stopping the Spammer

By Tangotiger, 03:47 PM

An a$$hole is in our midst.  He’s as yellow as they come, bouncing from IP to IP.  I have a few tools that I can implement, each worse than the other.

The first one I did was force in a “preview” button, that has been a staple at this site.  In essence, this forces a double-click, and prevents something automated from posting spam here.  Stops most, but not our resident a$$hole, who seems to take perverse pleasure in wasting my time.

My next option is to force you the poster to type in the text you see in an image, like here:

I’m not crazy about it, but, you guys tell me.

My last option is to enable registration, which I despise.

Typing the image text is fine with me.  It’s what I implemented on my site.

Yeah, I may have to do it.

I’d vote for the image text; I don’t like registration either.

That is the option I use with Blogger, having the text box; yeah, registration is not that great an option.  It cut the spam out completely, haven’t had one since that I can remember.

Obviously, I like the image/text.  I don’t think it’s a pain at all.  Also, you could cut out the required preview button if you had it.

I haven’t had one spammer/asshole on baseball graphs at all since I implemented it.  Of course, now that I’ve said that…

Ok, I’ve enabled image-text validation.  You’ll see it when you click PREVIEW.  Feel free to test it in this thread.

Test. Test. (Just like I used to shout into a mike in my rock band days of youth).

Hey, it worked! I haven’t been able to post here for a couple weeks.

And those lost posts were gold, man. smile

I appreciate that I can actually clearly read Tango’s type-in scramble. Usually when I see that, it’s hard to tell a zero from a letter O, and so on. Good job, Tango.

It actually came with the software.  I just turned it on.

Some people have been having problems posting.  I made a small change to the blog system.  Please use this thread to see if posting helps.

I wonder if there’s a browser issue?  I hate the new version of Explorer (and I think the new version of Office is going to ruin our lives).
