Speculations and suspicions: The Yu Darvish Story, Jeff Bagwell, and being a sports “reporter”

By Tangotiger, 05:29 PM

Seems all that note-passing in the 7th grade is finally paying off for all concerned.

Too bad the writer can’t express himself without the profanity—he lost me pretty quickly.

to each their own but i enjoyed the cursing. it’s also my guess that the author probably can express himself without profanity if he wanted to, he just chooses not to. i applaud his choice (but again, YMMV).

DJF spends an awful lot of time calling out rumour-mongers here, for a blog that has posted hourly updates on the Yu Darvish bidding.  Still my favourite Jays blog out there, for teaching me the “kosher hotdog” trick for sneaking down to the lower bowl.

@Detroit Michael: Stoeten’s got a paid gig at The Score where he uses more appropriate language, if that’s important to you.

I thought it was a good use of expletives.  You’ve gotta go with the flow, rather than impose your haughty principles.  That’s why I can’t stand when people complain about my style of writing.  Take me as I am, not as you want me to be.

"Too bad the writer can’t express himself without the profanity—he lost me pretty quickly.”

I agree.  I don’t see anything wrong with commenting on someone’s style.  It has a lot to do with readability, credibility, etc.  I thought this blogger’s use of cuss words was completely inappropriate.  What is he, a 7th grade gangster?

If I am going to be a regular reader of a blog, regardless of the content, I have to like the style of the writing. If this is this blogger’s typical writing style, his blog is not for me.

Not to mention the fact that I still don’t know the point he was trying to get across…

Agreed. I have no problem with profanity per se, but this guy just seems to have inserted it for it’s own sake. In the phrases he used a cuss word, it’s just something he threw in there, and it didn’t add anything.

It’s called “Drunk Jays Fan” - that’s the schtick they do there. It’s a “bit”. For readers/writers on the internet, you would think that you would get this. You don’t have to like it, or find it funny, but it’s not exactly a hard thing to figure out. The swearing is intentially inserted where it is unnecessary.

And if anything deserves swearing at, it’s professional “journalists” (I had the sarcastic quotes around professional, but realized, hey these people are getting paid to do this, that makes them professionals), even if they are sports “journalists”, that are reporting things that they know are baseless. Olney, Gammons, Heyman, these should be big enough names that they don’t have to spend their free time mongering, but they end up being the worst of them. I’m slowly learning to tune out everything except official announcements and the actual games.

Bitter Jays here, of course.

"What is he, a 7th grade gangster?”

hah! i can appreciate people not liking blue language in the entertainment they consume, different strokes, whatevs. but 7th grade gangster? i dont actually know how seventh grade gangsters would write (or what that even means) but im pretty sure it’s nothing like the blog, Drunk Jays Fan. however if it is, i guess i am a fan of 7th grade gangster literature. i should potentially seek more of it out.

#7, I don’t care what their schtick is.  I didn’t like it, period.  Just my opinion. I have nothing against cussing.  Maybe it is because I am 50 years old.  When I play golf and I hear the 20 somethings cuss like drunken sailors when they miss a putt, it sounds stupid to me too.  Again, I’m just old…
