I don’t know if it is the spam blocker or not, but navigating around the site this afternoon was extremely slow. If that IS the result of the update, is is definitely not worth it.

It took awhile to open this post.

I don’t mind the preview/typing image.  I went as long as I could on my blog with no filter, but one too many troll/spam posts made me put in word verification.

Posting #2 didn’t take that long.  This solution might just work.

I agree with MGL, although it could just be my computer or something else. When I click on one of the posts or the comment link, it’s taking about 15 seconds to load (I rarely even noticed any time before ... maybe a few secs).

Anyhow, thanks for keeping this going .. it is my favorite blog : )

It might be because I’m also working on this stuff.  I’m now shutting down any enhancements, to see if it’s the spam-blocker that’s slowing things down or not.

I have also added a “Complete Archives” link at the bottom of the main page, by date.  This is in addition to the listings by “Category”.

The spam-blocked is only active when the user is hitting submit.  Navigating from page to page does not invoke the spam-blocker, and therefore, that has no bearing on the performance.

The likely reason is that the server just happens to be slow at the moment, which happens when you share the server with hundreds of other sites.

That said, I’ll monitor, and if it looks like navigation is slow, I’ll disable the spam-blocker, and see if that changes anything.

If the only result of the spam blocker is that extra few seconds after you hit submit and the screen goes blank, then I am all for it.

This site tends to be slow (for me at least) for some reason.  Much more so than almost any other site I go to.  Maybe they have bad servers.  I have no idea.  Occasionally, it will even “time out” with no response.  I rarely get that with other sites.  Sometimes with BTF also.  I am guessing that some hosting servers are “better” than others.

I should have said that this site tends to be slow “at times.” Not all the time.  Not even most of the time. Maybe 10% of the time.

This site has never been slow for me. The only gremlin is the occassional lost post, but apart from that the usability is superb.

I tried to preview first, then submit. My post seemed to get eaten. I went back and just submitted with no preview ( my high school English teacher would be horrified) and it worked. Go figure.

I just wanted to flag that the tracker for most recent posts (bottom of the page) seems to be not working properly. And the site’s slow for me at times.

I’m going back to the way it was.  I’m getting 100 spam messages a day that are queued that I now need to validate.
