Sitekeeping

A tiny note: I changed the font of the byline to super big and surrounded by a box to make clear which is by MGL and which by me.  For some reason, a few people think that everything in here is by me, and I wanted to make sure that the distinction is obvious.

Yeah, but now it’s ugly.... rasberry

#2    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 10:33

Ok, let me reduce the font, but keep the box.

Can you change the color for an mgl post?  You get the current green, mgl gets blue or something?

#4    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 10:36

Hmmm… will take a bit of extra programming. Not much more, but I can try that.

Ok, I reduced the font and box size for the byline.  That better?

#5    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 10:38

I guess also that in Google Reader, the byline doesn’t show.  So, I guess I should include that in the reader too.

Ok, fixed RSS feed too.

Thanks, MGL!

Gold, Jerry, Gold!

#9    Ryan JL      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 12:33

Can you guys add pictures of yourselves to the post, and make it so that when Tango posts all the font is in lowercase, but when MGL posts it’s in ALL-CAPS?

Thanks.  wink

Do Tango and MGL look alike?  Maybe it would help if, in the pictures, Tango was wearing a red summer dress and MGL was wearing a light blue evening gown.

#11    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 12:55

I have *no* idea what MGL looks like (and vice versa).  Andy neither.  We’ve never met, we’ve never shared photos, nothing.

As for putting photos, in other forums, I just use a picture of The Book cover.  Obviously, won’t make sense here.  Maybe a picture of Tim Raines might work for me.  Or the Canadian flag.

#12    MGL      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 18:46

Tango would have to wear dark sunglasses and a hat.  My hair is thinning and turning gray, so I would have to use a bogus picture anyway…

#13    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 18:59

I have a full head of hair, but some strands of gray show up now and then.  When I let my beard grow for a week, little gray stubbles appear.  That’s my cue to shave.

#14    MGL      (see all posts) 2010/10/02 (Sat) @ 22:23

Oh yeah, the beard is the first to go…

bowie: I’m not sure why you are addressing me in your note.

#16    bowie      (see all posts) 2011/05/02 (Mon) @ 16:04

Tango:  my bad—was thinking you wrote the original post

#17    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/05/02 (Mon) @ 16:09

bowie: you are not the first one to think so, and I would love to find a way to make this stop.  The other sites don’t have this problem, so I don’t know why there’s an issue here.

What is the best way to make the reader read the byline?

#18    bowie      (see all posts) 2011/05/02 (Mon) @ 16:21

have MGL post more!  Since it seems like you author the overwhelming majority of them, I forget to even pay attention to the byline sometimes.

#19    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/05/02 (Mon) @ 16:25

One thing I was thinking of doing is splitting up the blog into two, so that you’d have to intentionally go to one or the other.  It’s not a pleasant alternative, but neither do I find it pleasant that posts are misattributed to the other author.

Your best bet may be one of two things, neither of which is ideal. It may help if you can change the formatting/design of the byline to make it more noticeable. Alternatively, maybe if one or both of you always end posts with something like a signature ("--Tango" or “--MGL"), but that likely adds a repeating step for you folks to remember.

#21    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/05/02 (Mon) @ 16:33

I changed the formatting of the byline several months back, but it was kind of ugly.  I’ll reintroduce it for a week or so, just to jar people…

#22    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/05/02 (Mon) @ 16:39

I reintroduced the byline box.

#23    dan      (see all posts) 2011/05/02 (Mon) @ 17:26

Is it possible to make the color in the byline box change depending on the author? Or have something change color (or something else noticeable) in the post…

It’s jarring enough for now that people will notice the byline before reading the post, but after a while people will stop paying attention to the byline and the effect will be gone.

Off topic, but related to the site:  the APBR site was recently hacked, and they lost nearly all of their old threads going back for years.  Terrible loss for that community.  I don’t know what kind of backup security you have here, but you might want to think about adding an extra backup layer that saves the archive every few weeks, to protect you (and us!) against the worst-case scenario.

#25    Tangotiger      (see all posts) 2011/05/03 (Tue) @ 23:57

I actually backup monthly automatically, and usually weekly when I remember.  I should setup a cron job for daily backup, but never figured out how to do it on my webhost.
