SI Vault: the first Bill James expose

By Tangotiger, 09:25 AM

Dan Okrent’s article introducing Bill James to the sports world in 1981.

This may be the origin of the Bull Durham “one hit a week” insight… except James phrases it as 1 hit every two weeks, when looking at .275 vs .300.

Also, I love how his 6’4”, 199 lb frame was “substantial” back in 1981.  Today, that would be “svelt”.

That article is well-written and just “good stuff” in general.

It blows me away that that was 27 years ago!  Several of today’s good analysts were not even born yet.

Haha, wow, throwback indeed.  It would be a little over four years before my birth.

Those Anaheim-Boston predictions at the end really came through for James.
