Scientific Baseall

By Tangotiger, 11:31 AM

A standard Brian Bannister article, but then this is a new one for me:

However, there is one sign of growth at the lower levels at an Oklahoma City training facility.

Glenn “Butch” Schoenhals, a retired neurosurgeon and longtime amateur coach, is the owner and president of Scientific Baseball, which operates the only PITCHf/x system outside a major league ballpark. He’s using the system to teach players as young as 9, and even to train umpires.

“This simplifies the process,” Schoenhals says. “It converts what we think to what we know.”

“That’s great,” Bannister says. “This is where I foresee all this going.”

Not entirely true as there are Pitch f/x systems installed in minor league parks, but I believe it is the only Pitch f/x system outside of professional baseball.  Alan Nathan has visited there.  Perhaps he has some comments that he can share.

Zelocity, who manufactures a doppler based system similar to Trackman, has concentrated its marketing on colleges, high schools, and indoor based training facilities.  I know that they have one installed here in upstate NY. The last I heard they only have baseball tracking softwhere for their PureFlight system, but are working on baseball tracking softwhere for their more sophisticated PureLaunch system.

As Peter said, I visited the Scientific Baseball facility three weeks ago (http://scientificbaseball.com/).  Butch ("Doc") Schoenhals has pitchf/x cameras set up at an indoor batting cage facility.  He uses the pitch-tracking capability to train pitchers, hitters, and even umpires.  Equally impressive is his video capability.  It is the only pitchf/x installation I know of outside of professional baseball.  Note, however, that a competing system PitchSight is installed at Boston College (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efsg1YTvprw).

That is awesome. Good to see a school like BC implementing something of this nature, too. Are there any other BCS schools (or even smaller schools) using something similar that’s been publicized?

Mike#4:  none that I know of.
